This report is designed to raise awareness of the scope of the overweight and obesity problem in our state and to spur concrete action to combat the crisis. It also outlines steps for improving the state's ability to monitor and assess weight-related behaviors.
Several key concepts informed the action plan:
- To effectively reverse the upward trend of overweight and obesity, we must promote change at all levels of influence: state, community, organizational, interpersonal, and individual.
- Success will require the dedicated, cooperative, and sustained efforts of leaders at each of these levels.
- Success will require removing barriers and increasing opportunities for healthy eating and active living in our communities
The people of Massachusetts embody a wealth of creativity and knowledge. If we pool expertise and coordinated action, we will be able to change policies and systems within our towns, schools, and workplaces to support healthy eating and active living. More of our residents will be able to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. It also is critical that we work together to help individuals discover the power they have to control their weight and, ultimately, their health.
